우리는 건축이 완결된 하나의 장면을 만드는 일이라기보다, 시간이 지나며 사람과 사물, 환경과 관계를 맺어가는 구조를 만드는 일이라고 생각합니다. 삶은 늘 계획보다 복잡하고, 건축은 그 변화와 우연을 받아들일 수 있어야 합니다. 그래서 우리는 설계를 시작할 때 형태를 먼저 결정하기보다 이미 존재하는 조건을 오래 들여다봅니다. 장소의 지형과 기후, 주변의 건물과 재료, 익숙한 생활 방식과 건설의 관습까지, 때로는 제약으로 보이는 것들 안에서 프로젝트를 시작할 단서를 찾습니다.
We understand architecture not as the making of a finished scene, but as the making of a structure that develops relationships with people, things and its environment over time. Life is always more complex than a plan, and architecture should be able to accommodate change, uncertainty and the unexpected. Rather than beginning with a predetermined form, we start by looking carefully at what is already there. Topography and climate, neighbouring buildings and materials, familiar ways of living and conventions of construction — even conditions that first appear to be constraints can become the starting point of a project.
그 과정에서 우리가 중요하게 생각하는 것은 명료한 구조와 여지입니다. 건물은 분명한 질서를 가져야 하지만 모든 사용을 미리 규정할 필요는 없습니다. 좋은 건축은 시간이 지나 다른 방식으로 점유되고, 고쳐지고, 덧붙여지면서도 처음의 질서를 잃지 않을 수 있다고 믿습니다. MMAL의 작업은 주택과 작은 상업 공간에서 시작해 숙박, 업무, 문화시설과 도시적 규모의 프로젝트로 확장되고 있습니다. 규모와 프로그램은 달라지지만 질문은 크게 다르지 않습니다. 무엇을 만들 것인가보다 무엇이 오래 남아야 하는지, 무엇을 결정할 것인가보다 무엇을 열어둘 것인지 생각합니다.
We are interested in clarity and openness. A building should have a legible order, but it does not need to prescribe everything that may happen within it. We believe architecture can be precise without being restrictive: capable of being occupied differently, altered and added to over time while retaining the strength of its underlying structure. Our work began with houses and small commercial spaces and is expanding into hospitality, workplaces, cultural buildings and projects at an urban scale. The scale and programme may change, but the questions remain much the same. We ask not only what should be built, but what should endure; not only what should be determined, but what should be left open.
우리는 익숙한 것을 새롭게 바라보고, 필요한 만큼 만들며, 시간이 지나도 다른 삶을 받아들일 수 있는 건축을 만들고자 합니다.
MMAL seeks to make architecture that looks again at the familiar, uses only what is necessary, and remains capable of accommodating lives we cannot yet predict.

MINCHEOL LEE, Founder and Co-director
Graduated from Korea University and London Metropolitan University, studying with Florian Beigel and Philip Christou.
He worked for several architectural practices in Seoul and London before founding MMAL.
He led design studios in Pai-chai University and Dong-yang University in Korea.
